For those who grew up on early ‘00s NBA basketball, Allen Iverson was so much more than just a gifted athlete. Although his off-court antics landed him in hot water more times than he would have liked, no one ever dared question his mental toughness and will to win. This is the same guy who shimmy-shaked Jordan right out of his AJ12s the first time he faced him as a fresh-faced rookie, while also getting Kobe Bryant to admit “I obsessively watched every game he had played, going back to the IUPU All-American Game. I obsessively studied his every success, and his every struggle. I obsessively searched for any weakness I could find.”
While fans often praise Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant for their unparalleled skill sets on the court, Iverson aka “The Answer,” however, had a profound impact on the greater pop-culture commonwealth. In many ways, the living legend was responsible for melding street culture’s major pillars with professional sports; think baggy clothes, hip-hop music, tattoos and corn rows.
The Game and Lil Wayne have long praised AI’s cultural relevance and have backed that up with a new joint dubbed “A.I. With The Braids.” Both rappers can be heard trading bars about Iverson’s seminal swag with a The Notorious B.I.G. “Get Money” sample seemingly laced right in. When asked to comment on the man himself, The Game had this to say, “Every kid including myself wanted to be Allen Iverson, from the baggy jerseys with the diamond chains, to the designs in his braids and whole swagger. Girls were in love with him and he was pound for pound the best player in the NBA. A.I. went from being my idol as a kid to being my brother in real life, so it’s only right I pay homage.”
